New Beginings


Hello!

Thank you for visiting my new blog - I've started this to sort of mimic my past blog, which chronicled the successes and struggles of living and teaching in Seoul, South Korea. I loved my 4 years in SoKo as an orchestra teacher but felt ready to try something new!

Next up, I am headed to Saudi Arabia to join the community of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). I got the picture above from the KAUST website - a beautiful view of part of our campus. From what I've learned, KAUST is a very international community of professors, students, and families. I'll be teaching at the K-12 school on campus, The KAUST School, as a MYP Music teacher. MYP is the middle years program of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum - so I'll be teaching the history, use, culture, and theory of music instead of how to make music as a team.

On this blog, I hope to show you what I learn about the culture I'm living in, as well as some snapshots of my travels. I recently went out into the desert with a group of ladies from work - we were saying goodbye to one of our coworkers who just ended her contract and moved to Spain/Lebanon. Best wishes to her as she begins a new adventure! We rented a space and hired a company to provide food. It was hard to find, but once we got there the fun began. The space is a bit challenging to describe, so I've included my photos. If you google saudi tents or red arab couches you'll get a better idea. As for the food.... we had an entire lamb cooked over a fire for us. It came with mountains of delicious rice and some yummy sauces. We sat on the ground (with a table cloth and real plates and forks and knives) and just went for it. 14 ladies ate that whole lamb (and a couple rotisserie chickens). learning

I had this giant post drafted about how my classroom and teaching life here is totally different than my previous experiences in Korea and Minnesota. I read it and didn't feel super great about just pointing fingers at cultures and listing differences. They're apparent, they're real, they impact me, but I'm not really here to write lists and draw comparisons. I had a check-in meeting with my vice principal yesterday and I'd be lying if I told you I was calm or excited about it. I didn't even know my vice principal's name before I moved here because in my interview process I was working with the secondary principal and the director of the school. I went in and was nervous - I came ready to take notes and be honest about my shortcomings in this entirely new environment. He told me to put it down and asked me how I'm doing. Local Adventure

Thanks to some fantastic friends/coworkers, we went on a great little explore recently. Towards the end of december, a friend shared  this pin  with us. It doesn't look remarkable in the normal maps view, but if you click on satellite (in the lower left corner of the corner of the map) you can see a structure. What I've heard from others is that it's an old deserted turkish fort. How we figured that out, I have no idea, but I'm going with it! It took us about 45 minutes to drive out there and we brought a picnic. Logan's FJ Cruiser got us up the mountain (maybe a hill by many peoples' standards?) most of the way and then we started climbing.
